The Major of Energy and Power Engineering (Thermal Engineering) began undergraduate enrollment in 1984, jointly training of master students with Beijing University of Science and Technology in 1985, and was granted a Master's degree program in Thermal and Power Engineering in 2003. It was approved as the characteristic specialty and the key disciplineofAnhui Province in 2008, was approved as the national characteristic construction specialty in 2009; was granted a Master's degree program in Power Engineering in 2010 and a Master's Degree program in First-Class Discipline of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics in 2011; was selected as the major of Excellent Engineer Program by Ministry of Education in 2013; was approved as the pilot specialty of comprehensive reform of provincial specialtiesofAnhui Province in 2014; a Doctor's degree program of Second-Class Discipline of Energy Saving and Environmental Protection in Metallurgical Process was granted in 2018; an innovative plan of cultivating excellent talents in the "Six Excellences and One Top" project of Anhui province was approved in 2019. Moreover, the major owns two provincial innovation teams (the Energy Conversion and Utilization team, and the High-Efficiency Combustion and Pollutant Ultra-Low Emission team), an Engineering Technology Research Center of the Department of Education in Metallurgical Process Energy Saving and Pollutant Control, and the Maanshan Key Laboratory of New Combustion Technology and High-Efficiency Heat Exchange.
The Department of Energy and Power Engineering has 7 full-time professors, 2 specially appointed professors, 9 associate professors, 17 lecturers, 4 doctoral instructors, 17master’ssupervisors, 2 academic leaders of Anhui Province, 1 candidate for academic leaders of Anhui Province, 1 famous teaching instructor and 2 provincial new talents in Teaching. There are 3 research teams: the thermal energy conservation and emission reduction team, the high-efficiency combustion and ultra-low emission team, the advanced material and equipment of new energy team.
Over the past five years, the teachers of our department have successively undertaken 11 NSFC projects, 1 National Major Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development Special Program, 3 supported projects by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 Returned Overseas Chinese Personnel Program of the Ministry of Education, more than 10 provincial and ministerial research projects, and more than 50 lateral scientific research key research projects of large and medium-sized enterprises such as Bao Steel, Ma Steel, Nan Steel, etc., with total research funds of more than 25 million yuan. More than 150 high-level academic papers have been published, including more than 80 papers cited by SCI and EI, more than 20 invention patents have been authorized. A second prize of National Iron and Steel Association for Science and Technology Progress was granted, and 2 academic monographs and textbooks have been published.
The Major of Energy and Power Engineering is guided by the principle of "solid fundamentals, strong cross-cutting and innovation-oriented", and relies on the existing two provincial key first-level disciplines of our school (Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, and Environmental Science and Engineering). Through interdisciplinary and comprehensive cross-cutting, along with the advantages of industry-oriented and the integration of the existing resources of our university, a great quantity of distinctive and competitive disciplines in energy-saving and emission reduction in industrial thermal engineering, efficient and low pollution combustion, utilization of solid waste resources, advanced materials and equipment of new energy have been formed gradually. Innovative work has been carried out in energy-saving of metallurgical system, energy management and control system of furnaces, emission reduction of gas-solid pollutants in the metallurgical industry, etc. They have been extensively applied in enterprises and have produced remarkable economic benefits along with a large number of scientific and technological achievements.
Our speciality construction focuses on cooperation and communication. In recent years, undergraduates have been jointly educated with Purdue University of United States, Northeastern University of Japan, Chung Yuan Christian University of Taiwan, Nanyang Polytechnic of Singapore and Southeast University of Norway. A sino-foreign cooperative education demonstration project was approved in 2013. The master students can be trained in cooperation with the Gailemer campus of Purdue University in the United States, which effectively promotes the cultivation of the young talents in our department.
So far, more than 2400 graduates have been cultivated. In recent years, the employment rate of graduates has been stable at over 97% and the post-graduate rate has reached over 30%. They are mainly engaged in the design, operation, management and development in the fields of fluid machinery and engineering, energy and environmental engineering, energy recycling and utilization engineering, power engineering, refrigeration, air conditioning and new energy, etc. Most of them have become backbones of technology and management in metallurgy, power, chemical industry, machinery, new energy and other industries. A large number of outstanding alumni have emerged and a good social reputation has been obtained.
